Back in US, the Japanese giant is relentlessly pursuing GM and Ford in their stronghold. Toyota’s Japanese plants will export more than 1 million units to North America this year; and local plants will sell 2.55 million units. It has the money and muscle to do the job. In the quarter ending September 2005 GM lost $1.6 billion and Ford lost $284 million; while Toyota declared a profit of $158 million. Says Dennis Kuneo, vice president, North America, Toyota: “We are proud to be an integral part of the American economy.”
