In all this euphoria of the Indian star shining, Kerala shines the brightest. There were around 5.9 million tourist arrivals in Kerala in 2004, growing by 16.69% ‘God’s own country’ has been voted as one of the top 50 must see destinations in the world by National Geographic Traveller. Its backwater lagoons, coconut palms and ayurvedic centres have indeed been major tourist attractions. Although every state in India is a potential tourist hub, tourism is inextricably linked to development, and in Kerala the world finds a state that emulates the west in social standards, if not in per capita incomes........
