Typically, a multiplex in India consists of four to six theatres of different capacities. There would be one with close to a thousand seats while the smaller ones would have just about 200 seats. Big budget mainstream movies are shown in the big theatres while the smaller ones get to show the ‘off beat’ movies. The biggest impact the multiplex culture has had is on the producers of these movies. In 1998, when Nagesh Kukoonur made Hyderabad Blues, he went through a nightmare trying to tie up theatre releases.
